A new adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen will be staged at Sheffield’s Trafalgar Warehouse on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 November.

Carmen’s Voice, presented by Atelier Armonico, relocates the opera from nineteenth-century Seville to contemporary Northern England. It has been developed with IDAS, a charity supporting people affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.

The company says creative workshops with survivors in Yorkshire have helped shape the production’s themes, language and dramatic setting. The adaptation explores Carmen’s independence and how her story is understood today.

Performances will be in English, accompanied by a 12-piece chamber orchestra. The production runs for approximately one hour.

It was conceived by conductor and artistic director Davide Levi, stage director Sasha Regan and creative producer Leila Alexander. Its opening falls at the start of the international 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Regan said: “Some projects challenge you to look at a familiar work in an entirely new way, and Carmen’s Voice has done exactly that for me.”
